Printed card with a small woodcut of the "Old Sutter Mill." Hand SIGNED by James W. Marshall. 2 1/4" X 5 1/4". The printed text reads: "The discoverer of gold in California. January 19th, 1848. James W. Marshall discovered gold while building the lumber mill for John Sutter at Coloma, California. The ensueing gold rush insured his fame for posterity. Marshall never made a great fortune in the hunt for gold and late into his life sold these signed cards to augment his income. Few have survived to this day. A striking and rare momento of a landmark event in American history.
